The Chalets are all brick under thatch with views over the Amphitheatre. There is very little difference in the view between the two camps. The upper camp chalets are slightly larger. All are cool in summer and cosy in winter, the rooms have fire places for those cold winter nights. Love it!

Thendele Camp has panoramic views of the spectacular Amphitheatre in the Drakensberg Mountains which overlooks the Thukela Waterfall. With a drop of 950m, it is the second highest waterfall in the world after Angel Falls. Possibly the highest if they were measured with the same criterion. Also known as the Tugela Waterfall. 'Thukela' in Zulu means 'startling'.
There is a most spectacular hike to the top of Mount-Aux-Sources and the Tugela Falls. One would need to drive around to the Sentinel car park - through the village of Phuthaditjhaba following the R57- this is about a 2 hour drive from Thendele, via the R74. From the car park it is a relatively easy climb to summit the Amphitheatre, the round trip to the Tugela River would take between 5 to 8 hours, depending on ones fitness level. We would suggest a very early departure from Thendele Camp. Final access to the top of the Amphitheatre is by means of two chain ladders. One should take care with respect to the weather, clouds can come rolling in unexpectedly. There is another trail to the foot of the Tugela Falls which starts from Thendele Camp. This is a relatively easy 7km climb along the Tugela Gorge. The trail winds through indigenous Yellow-wood and Protea forests. The last section of the hike up to the Tugela Falls is a bit of a boulder hopping exercise. A chain ladder leads up the final section, with a view of the falls plunging down the Amphitheatre in a series of five cascades, which is breathtaking after Summer rains.
The Royal Natal Park and Thendele Camp are not only about the Amphitheatre, Mont-aux-sources and the Tugela Falls. There are numerous trails to hike and San Rock Art shelters to visit. The fishing in the dams and river can be excellent. The Park authorities maintain a stable, from where horse rides can be enjoyed.
There is no restaurant at Thendele as all the accommodation is self-catering. Alternatively there are nearby restaurants and hotels where one could dine.
Note that the shops at Thendele in the Royal Natal Park have very limited supplies. The closest town for supplies is Bergville some 44 kms away.
For those who would prefer a venue in the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park with a restaurant, then Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife have the Didima and Giants Castle Camps. Set in the Cathedral Peak Game Reserve and Giants Castle Game Reserves respectively. These camps also offer self-catering accommodation.
